Abstract

Theeffectsofincludinglyophilisedwholeyeast,Saccharomycescerevisiae,inthedietontheseabreaminnateimmune

responsewereinvestigated.Giltheadseabream(SparusaurataL.)specimenswerefedfourdifferentdietsfor4weeks:acommercialdietascontrolandthesamedietsupplementedwith1,5or10g/kgyeast.After1,2and4weeks,serumcomplementtitres,asahumoralparameter,andphagocytic,respiratoryburst,myeloperoxidaseandnaturalcytotoxicactivitiesofhead-kidneyleucocytes,ascellularparameters,wereevaluated.Theresultsshowedthatyeastsupplementsenhancedallthelatterresponses,butnotthehumoralresponse.Thisenhancementwasdose-dependentexceptforthecytotoxicactivitythatwasonlystimulatedbythelowerdoseofyeastassayed.Asyeastcellwallsareabletoenhancetheseabreamcellularinnateimmuneresponse,theseresultssupportthepossibleuseofwholeyeastasnaturalinmunostimulantsincommon®shdiets.#2002ElsevierScienceB.V.Allrightsreserved.

1.Introduction

Naturalimmunostimulantsarevaluableforactivat-ingthe®shimmunesystemandprotecting®shagainstadverseconditions(Anderson,1992;Sakai,1999).Amongthem,yeastSaccharomycescerevisiaehasbeenfoundtobeagoodenhancerofthetroutimmunesystem(Siwickietal.,1994).Yeastcellwallsareconstructedalmostentirelyoftwoclassesof
